What to Look For in a Waterproof Dog Bed

Does it Keep the Dog Dry?

Look for solutions that really keep the dog dry.

For example, a mesh underneath that allows urine to pass through to a mat away from the dog.

You could then use either a washable piece of fabric on the floor or buy the disposable pads that could be easily swapped out when wet to make the cleaning nice and easy.

Is it Comfortable for Older Dogs?

Find a bed that is comfortable for older dogs, dogs with ailments such as arthritis, and dogs that have paralysis.

These types of beds typically are up off the floor on legs. This is so the animal’s body does not have constant pressure from the hard floor surface.

Is it Mold and Mildew Resistent?

The materials used should be mold and mildew resistant. This means the cloth would last longer, plus the dog wouldn’t be getting sick from the bacteria.

Also, it wouldn’t smell as bad, which could be quite overwhelming when you own more than one canine!

Is Part or All of the Bed Washable?

Some parts of the bed need to be washable and/or easy to clean. Either the covers that came with it or the mesh and other fabrics used to make it.

Hopefully, it would dry quickly, too, so that the dog could have its bed back as quickly as possible.

Is a Waterproof Cover the Best Choice?

We should note at this point that there are plenty of excellent choices in waterproof coverings. And this is an excellent idea because it keeps the pad from decaying quickly and smelling.

Remember that the urine has to go somewhere. It is either going to roll off the mattress onto the rug or floor, or it is going to be absorbed by the pet’s fur. This is not great because now you have to wash the dog, too!

If you decide on one with waterproofing, be sure to add a pad or mat as well so that you can remove it when wet. In fact, if you don’t mind doing laundry, you can purchase those washable soaker pads used for incontinent people.

They have cotton on one side that touches the body, and then a waterproof backing or twill on the other side to prevent the urine from reaching the chair cushion or bed mattress.
